Tips for choosing lockers

What factors should be considered when choosing lockers?

The installation and arrangement of changing-room or dressing-room lockers is a fundamental activity in both business and institutional environments. This blog is for you if you run a swimming pool or gym, or if you want to invest in developing your company, but you feel lost in the ocean of choices and contradictory information.

When choosing lockers, besides size and function, there are several other factors that need consideration. How many people will use the lockers? What is your available budget? Are there any special regulations to comply with? All these questions matter when making your decision.

How many people are lockers needed for, and how much space is available?

The first question you need to ask yourself is how many people you need to provide lockers for. This will determine the necessary number of compartments. If space is limited, but you still need lockers for a lot of people, it’s worth choosing a split locker with more than one compartment in each column (e.g. short-door lockers or Z-door lockers). If you have plenty of space available, however, then long-door lockers are the most comfortable solution. Another ideal option is the space-saving type, which can hold even long coats while taking up less space. For very small rooms, we recommend the small-compartment version, combined with wall hooks or benches fitted with hooks, because the compartments are too small for big coats.

What function will the lockers fulfil?

It is important to consider what kind of items will be stored in the lockers. Long-door lockers are the most comfortable, as everything will fit inside. If it’s important to store dirty clothes separately from clean ones, then divided lockers are ideal. If just a few things need to be locked away, small-compartment lockers are optimal. Split lockers – short-door and Z-door versions – can be used for the same purpose as divided lockers. They are the perfect solution if the aim is to combine secure storage with maximum use of space.

What special regulations must be complied with?

When choosing lockers, it is important to consider any special requirements that may arise due to the circumstances of the given environment or branch of industry. One example is the HACCP system (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points), which contains the rules for food safety. According to the HACCP, clean and dirty clothes must be stored separately to prevent pollution or contamination. In this instance, ideal options are divided lockers, divided lockers with shoe holders, short-door or Z-door lockers.

Other hygiene requirements may raise the need for types of lockers with special characteristics. An example is lockers with angled roofs, which prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on top. Galvanised plinths resist water and corrosion, and therefore have a longer life. INOX lockers are made from stainless steel. If your working environment must comply with HACCP or other hygiene regulations, and you are looking for lockers with low maintenance, which can be easily disinfected or cleaned with liquids, then choosing the INOX range may be the best decision.

Comfort is another key factor in planning changing rooms. Benches make it more comfortable for people to change their clothes and their shoes, and provide space for workers to rest or wait. Hooks are also useful for coats, clothes and other items.

What are PLUS lockers?

If you are looking for comfort as well as extra space for storage and seating, then PLUS lockers are worth considering. PLUS lockers include a top extension locker, for extra storage space, and a comfortable seat. The main locker and the extension can be opened with the same key. Changing rooms will surely never be untidy, because there are separate, convenient places for keeping shoes.

How wide are the compartments?

- long-door: 300 mm

- space-saving: 250 mm

- Z-door: 350 mm

- short-door: 300 mm

- divided: 400 mm

- divided, with shoe holder: 500 mm
